Choosing Materials That Age Well
Some materials wear out. Others wear in. Knowing the difference saves money and gives a space more character over time.

Materials that age well tend to share a few qualities: they are honest about what they are, they can be repaired, and they develop a patina rather than simply looking worn.
Look for solid, repairable surfaces
Solid timber can be sanded and re-oiled. Natural stone can be honed. Lime plaster can be patched. These finishes forgive everyday life in a way that thin laminates rarely do.
Consider touch as well as looks
The surfaces you touch most often, such as handles, worktops and stair rails, deserve the most attention. Brushed brass, oiled oak and textured stone all improve with handling.
Plan for maintenance
Every material needs some care. Choose finishes whose maintenance suits the way you live, and the space will look better every year.
